The Māngere Ōtāhuhu Arts website Noticeboard and E-Newsletter is a place for creative artists, groups and organisations in the local area to share, seek, promote, and post a "call-out" to the local community.
You can submit your notice for either the Noticeboard, or the monthly E-Newsletter or both. We'll also endeavour to share your notice on the Māngere Ōtāhuhu Arts Facebook page if you like.

 EXHIBITION OPENING - Rua i te Kukakore.

Rua i te kukakore

Ōtāhuhu College proudly presents, “Rua i te kukakore”, a group exhibition showcasing the talents of tauira, alumni, and kaiako.

“Rua i te kukakore”, translated to ‘carving without chips’ takes its name from an old learning tier of whakairo (Māori carving), meaning all aspects of carving are visualised in thought.

Traditional stories, myths, and legends have been skilfully woven into each piece in this vast exhibition spanning a variety of art forms that reflect the diverse and dynamic spirit of our community.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience the rich cultural heritage and boundless creativity that thrive within the halls of Ōtāhuhu College.

Exhibition Opening
Friday 21 July, 6 pm

Whakairo Workshop:
Saturday 29 July, 10 am-12 pm
Saturday 5 August, 10 am-12 pm

This interactive workshop, led by students from Ōtāhuhu College, explores the art of whakairo (Māori carving).
You will learn about traditional patterns and design elements and will have the opportunity to sketch your design.
Participants will be able to watch featured artists demonstrate their carving skills and learn kōrero around whakairo.
Suitable for all ages.

 

Anna Delany is an internationally recognised photographer who has exhibited in New York City, London, and throughout Aotearoa. Anna also works as the Art Teacher at Henderson Intermediate School and has worked with Jay in the past arranging for her Intermediate students to be mentored by his College students. www.annadelany.com

Jay Mason (Ngāti Awa) is an expert carver and the whakairo teacher at Ōtāhuhu College. He holds a degree in whakairo from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and is actively involved in many aspects of the community.  The selected students from Ōtāhuhu College will be from Jay Mason’s whakairo classes (Years 11-13). Nga Hononga Waka- youtube video (Jay Mason is introduced at 4:35 into the video)
