The task of marketing and promoting your own business or creative skills is vitally important. But with all the competition out there and the huge range of marketing and advertising options available to you, this task can be challenging! So come join us for a conversation around MARKETING & PROMOTION, with guest speakers offering advice, insights and learnings from their own business expereince.
Co-owner of Milan Motors Limited along with Partner Tenari Vai. Ruta and Tenari have been in the automotive repair business since 2013. They have created their own website, business cards, manage the google reviews and all marketing related materials for the business.
In this session Ruta will cover her thought process and what she as a business decided to do, as well as challenges.
“In the beginning we could have invested in email marketing, a content management system, marketing automation software, online paid advertising to gain exposure for our business but its vitally important to take a step back and understand the goals of your business before looking to do that and also who your customers are. Getting online is important but not complicated nor should you pay too much for it. Keeping it simple is key and do it yourself as a small business to start off with is even better.”

Jo and her husband Justin started a local community media initiative called 275 Times in September 2015. This included a printed magazine which was circulated throughout the community and facebook page. The aim of the initiative is to share the real stories of Mangere and provide a platform for Mangere people to communicate their stories back to the community.
Jo’s background is in Graphic Design so was able to design the magazine, logo, website and also promote the stories wider by setting up the facebook page which now has a following of 3,627. The facebook page has been a collaborative process. Justin’s role was as Journalist and Editor. In August 2016, we handed the media initiative over to Hone and Roger Fowler who did an excellent job in expanding the magazine and setting up a wider team. Currently the publication has been put on hold.
Currently Jo is the Communications Manager at Mangere College which was established as a new role. Jo manages the social media accounts and has also started a Mangere College Media Club (MC Media) this year which currently has students running their own social media accounts (Instagram and facebook), also doing photography and videography with the aim of sharing their stories to the school and wider community.
As well as managing social media, Jo does other communication tasks such as the school newsletter, manages the website, coordinates and designs the school magazine and networking to ensure Mangere College’s narrative is shared to the wider community and the school is aware of the wider story of the community as she believes forming these relationships as crucial for the overall marketing process.
In this session Joanne will cover how she set up the marketing 275 Times and Mangere College, plus some tips on upping your social media game.

This series of business knowledge sharing events offers an interactive learning and development opportunity to help you to get your business idea either off the ground, or as successful as you know it can be!
Every 6 weeks we’ll be hold an evening event where local residents can meet-up and learn about running a business and share their knowledge with each other. For each event we invite guest speakers, ranging from local business owners to creative entrepreneurs. Our speakers will provide insights and learnings on a variety of useful topics.
The purpose of our Māngere Ōtāhuhu Business Series is to help you support your own business and creative endeavours. Whether this be getting a idea off the ground, building financial sustainability into your existing business, or finding others to collaborate with and be inspired by. Our events will be informal and relaxed, with food and drinks, so that you can enjoy it and make the most of this opportunity together.
